Dear Editor
The Minister Of Sports, Fikile Mbalula must pay close attention to what logic has emerged since the world cup. While its great to have international events, the euphoria only lasts as long as the cameras are on you.
We as a country are certainly still recovering from the financial baggage from last years world cup and we should not be thinking of holding another international events of such a magnitude any time soon.
It is completely ludicrous the International olympic committee executive member and Sascoc executive Sam Ramasamy said on east coast radio" he would motivate for Durban to be the host".
I only hope that when the Minister said "All doors are still open" this was just a comment that was made to make the minister say something as he had nothing to say so he got his lime light. Durban cannot host any games as just over a year ago the world Cup has passed. On The Durban skyline we have a big white elephant sitting in our city which costs R250 000 to hire and due to the Moses Mabhida Stadium running a loss the Rate payers off Ethekwini Municipality is paying for this blunder about 100 million rand a year. The ICC holds all these beautiful and glamorous functions but the ICC also is running a loss and needs to be bailed out by the city.
The people of Durban did not benefit from the World Cup in any way that will effect the present or future generations.
So Minister take the advise from your Comrades and don't make the people off Durban pay for yours and Sam Ramasamy ego what we need is for the housing backlog and the unemployment to be tackled.
That is what government should be addressing and focusing on. If the same effort, collaboration and mass action that was put into the World Cup could be put into those then we will be on the right track.
National Government quashed the idea by announcing that it would not support an Olympic bid, preferring instead to concentrate on "the delivery of basic services to all South Africans".
So let's built a nation and watch the Olympic games on SABC in 2020 and 2024 than the rate payer off Ethekwini Municipality paying for the games after its gone.
