A mass spring clean up had to be done in Lenham after residents complained of living in fear and claimed that the dense bush was being used by criminals as a hideout and a place where youngsters allegedly smoke drugs.
" Several houses were broken into recently and the thieves made off with clothing and other goods," claimed Mrs Naidoo who lives across the road from dense bush. She said the incident could be linked to the thugs who hide in the bush.
Residents have now also declared the area located near a small river an eyesore and health hazard to them. They complained of others using the bush to dump rubbish illegally.
"The illegal rubbish dumping has made it a health hazard. If the municipality doesn't know what to do with that plot, then they must sell it to me," said Naidoo.
She added " On behalf of all Lenham residents we want to thank Cllr Bradley for answering to ours call for help and making sure that the issue is resolved."
The residents also said that since summer was around the corner the bush would inhabit snakes and rats. Another resident claimed to have seen teenagers use the dense overgrowth as a hideout in which to smoke drugs and carry out other "dirty activities".
Minority Front Cllr Bradly Singh said that officials from park and garden were deployed to the area in the early hours of the morning and worked until late into the evening due to the bush being overgrown
"The recent rains must have been a main contributor to the bush over growing," he said. "I highly thank Park and gardens officials for responding quickly and helping to keep Phoenix clean and neat. While also ensuring that the interest of the residents are taken care of."
